Когда при реализации новой функции разработчикам потребовалось задать ее зависимость от нативных библиотек в нескольких архитектурах, размер приложения резко увеличился с 10 до 46 МБ. Команде пришлось срочно искать выход из этой ситуации.
Что было сделано
Разработчики Duolingo смогли значительно сократить размер приложения без ущерба для его функциональных возможностей с помощью набора Android App Bundle. Ранее в приложении использовался один пакет APK, и, хотя возможность внедрения нескольких пакетов рассматривалась, такой вариант требовал значительного изменения скриптов сборки в связи с обработкой кодов версий и имен файлов. Кроме того, разработчикам пришлось бы пройти дополнительное обучение управлению выпусками. А вот для внедрения наборов App Bundle практически не потребовалось изменять уже имеющийся скрипт – специалисты быстро создали и загрузили их.
«Мы смогли легко перейти на наборы Android App Bundle», – рассказывает Боб Миз (Bob Meese), директор по прибыли в Duolingo. – Наш автоматизированный скрипт сборки изначально поддерживал загрузку пакетов APK – и мы просто добавили в него поддержку наборов App Bundle. Для этого нам пришлось изменить всего пару строк кода».
По словам Боба Миза с тестированием все тоже было просто. Специалисты Duolingo использовали версии для внутреннего тестирования, которые было удобно распространять среди специалистов. Внедрение обновленного приложения также не составило труда.
Результаты
Благодаря внедрению наборов Android App Bundle компания Duolingo смогла сократить размер скачиваемого приложения с 46 до 20 МБ, то есть на 56 %. Duolingo – международная компания-разработчик бесплатных курсов по обучению иностранным языкам, и для нее было критически важно создать приложение небольшого размера, которое могут установить на свои устройства пользователи во всем мире. По словам Боба Миза, наборы App Bundle помогли разработчикам сократить размер приложения без ущерба для функциональности.
Впечатлившись результатами по уменьшению размера приложения за счет использования наборов для различных двоичных интерфейсов приложения и разрешений экрана, компания хочет создать отдельные наборы App Bundle по языкам. Кроме того, Duolingo рассматривает возможность добавления в наборы App Bundle динамических функциональных модулей, что позволит ещё больше сократить размер приложения и внедрить функции по запросу (которые устанавливаются в тот момент, когда они становятся нужны пользователю).
